Macau, September 13th 2008 – Imagine the night sky of Macau, illuminated by fireworks and accompanied by the cheers and the applause of the audience impressed by the spectacular lights and the sound-show. What a great event!
The yearly, „Macau International Fireworks Display Contest“, not only lights up the night-sky of Macau but also awes the countless viewers. The local spectators and numerous tourists always look forward to the fantastic fireworks that bring a festive atmosphere to the event.
The contest is fast becoming a major tourist attraction and many visit Macau especially during this time to spend an exotic and romantic holiday.
Macau pays great attention to its cultural heritage; the production of fireworks is among the three leading industries in Macau and holds great value in the city’s colorful cultural history. To celebrate this history, Macau set up the, „Macau International Fireworks Display Contest“, at the end of the 80s in order to demonstrate the unique atmosphere of Macau when the spectacular fireworks illuminate the setting of the city.
The „Macau International Fireworks Display Contest“ has proved to be one of the most famous international events. It took place for the first time in 1989 – with only 5 participating teams. By 1995, it had grown to a 10-team-contest in which two teams in one night demonstrate their firework competence.
Over the last years, more than 100 teams from China, the Philippines, Thailand, Japan, Korea, Australia, England, Switzerland, Portugal (also with a long firework tradition), Spain and last but not least Germany have participated in the „Macau International Fireworks Display Contest“.
In 2008, the festival was all about the 20th anniversary. For this occasion the 10 best participants out of more than 100 attending countries were chosen to add a special character to the festival that is unique around the world. We – the Team Potsdamer Feuerwerk –had the special honor to open this festival on September 13th 2008 with our show. Once again we want to thank everybody for their confidence in us – especially, because in the last 20 years the opening slot has always been reserved for the Asian participants of the contest!
